World Cup Knockout Stage Explained — Round of 32 to Final

The group stage is forgiving. The knockout stage is not. One bad game, one unlucky bounce, one referee decision — and four years of work disappears. This is where the World Cup truly begins.
The Bracket — Round by Round
Round of 32 (16 matches): The new round for 2026 thanks to the 48-team format. Group winners face 3rd-place teams, runners-up face each other. Round of 16 (8 matches): The traditional first knockout round. Quarterfinals (4 matches): Down to 8 teams. Every match is elite. Semifinals (2 matches): The final four. Losing here is the most painful experience in sport. Final (1 match): The biggest single sporting event on earth. Third-place match: The day before the Final — a strange but entertaining consolation game.
Extra Time Rules
Two 15-minute halves. No golden goal — you play the full 30 minutes regardless of who scores. Teams get one additional substitution in extra time (6 total instead of 5).
Penalty Shootouts
Five penalty kicks per team, alternating. If tied after 5 each, sudden death — first team to score when the other misses, wins. The coin toss determines who goes first (going first has a ~60% win rate historically).
The Path to the Final
A team needs to win 5 knockout matches to become world champion (increased from 4 in the 32-team format). That's 510 minutes of knockout football — or potentially more with extra time.
